Hair
Removal

Will it hurt?
Removing the strip very quickly is much like
pulling a band aide off.
How often should I have my eyebrows done (or lip, chin,
etc.)?
Every three weeks is average and will keep them in shape. Some of my
clients can go a little longer, depending on how fast they fill in. Eye brow
hair replaces itself in six weeks, so by that time all of your brows
have grown back in.
How much growth do I need before the service?
Your
hair needs to at least have a slight "bend" to it, about 10 days
of growth.
Which type of product works best?
We use a liquid
organic product called "Nudesse". It is body temperature, it
cannot burn like waxes or sugars can, and it epilates the whole hair bulb,
rather than just the root, resulting in slower re-growth and even
discouraging the hair from growing back over a period of time of regular
servicing.
Will it make the hair grow in coarser or thicker?
No,
it actually thins it out and discourages it from growing back.
What causes those little bumps after?
These are
hairs that have been "pulled" at, but not removed because they
were not long enough for the product to "grasp". This doesn't
always happen and is just temporary.

How often do I need to get my haircut?
Average time between haircuts to maintain
your current style would be 4 weeks if it is very short, six for medium
and 8 weeks for most other styles. Reason being once the hair grows a 1/2
inch or more, it starts to loose the shape cut into the style.
Is there a difference between store brand and
professional products?
Yes, you will find better performance, higher
quality ingredients, higher concentration of the product (less water) and
a better price per ounce or usage with the professional products. We find
that most drug store brands "coat" the hair with a buildup that really
affects your drying time! And eventually, will even prevent needed
moisture absorption to your hair. Most professional products are
formulated for targeted specific hair needs, so they really do need
professional recommendation. You may buy something in the stores that will
not work well with your hair, even if it is being sold as a
"professional" product.
What is the difference between a razor and a scissor
cut?
A scissor cuts the hair very bluntly for a very defined line, as in
the classic "bob cut". It also provides a heavy volume line if
desired.
A razor cutting tool will provide a very "textured", tapered
line resulting in slightly different lengths in the hair ends. This
can also provide fullness, but with a much lighter, softer, airy
feel and look to the resulting hairline. Soft, airy texture
can also be put into the hair with scissors using specialized techniques
used by your stylist.
What is "texturizing"?
Texture within your hairstyle can be achieved in several ways-
mechanically, as with shears or razor tools and temporarily with tools
like irons and/or texturizing styling products, or chemically, such
as with perming techniques or hair straightners. Notice how the texture of
the hair changes with hair color- this is a slight chemical change
resulting in a different texture to the hair than you started with before
hair color. Most texturizing is done during haircutting, putting different
lengths of hair within the style to add body and fullness. The next most
often used form of texturizing the hair is with a chemical treatment,
"perms."
My hair is
thinning! What can I do?
When it comes to men- the least to do is shampoo twice! This deep
cleanses the scalp and follicles to remove oils that have absorbed the
testosterone hormone, which can put the hair in a longer and longer
"resting" stage, until eventually it stays in that state and miniaturizes
to oblivion. Hair vitamins are good working from the inside, (Vitamin
B's), topical crème for thinning hair help to feed and maintain hair
growth. Genetics have a say in all of this, too. Rogaine can help up to
30% of the population. If the hair loss is sudden, a visit to the doctor
may uncover something else going on in your body.
Our service in our salon uses a High Frequency hair and scalp glass rake
to stimulate hair growth. Massage, or a good brushing with a natural
bristle brush, also helps with stimulating circulation, which is how your
hair receive it's vital nutrients from the blood to grow.

I want to get a perm and a color. How long should I wait
between services and which one should be done first?
It is possible
they could be performed on the same day, or from three days to a week
apart. Perms should be done first if you are doing them closely together
(within a few weeks). In between perms, average can be anywhere from 3
months to six or more, depending on your hair style. Time in between hair
colors could anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks up to 8 weeks at the most. This
really depends on your tolerance for "roots", 1/4 of an inch can show up
in 3 three weeks, in 8 weeks, you could have 1 1/2 inches or more.
What is the difference between a cap hi-light and
foiling?
Caps have hair pulled through at random, typically using only
one color to hi-light. This should only be used with shoulder length or
less hair. Foiling is more precise, weaving hair exactly where
and how much. Several colors can be used easily with foiling. A more
natural effect will be achieved with foils also allowing more time between
touch-ups since the color can be applied more closely towards the scalp.
Foils are used with "Blocking" color, "chunking" and dimensional hair
coloring.
What is the difference between semi and permanent
hair-color?
Semi is deposit only; you can change tone, cover gray or
darken. Permanent hair color can do all that and lighten your color.
Permanent hair color is what works best to cover over 20% gray hair.

What is
different about "Box" hair color bought in the drugstore and the hair
color used in a salon for professional color?
What is used in the salon is for professional use only. The colorist
has been trained in product formulation and techniques for that particular
hair color. Professional colors are are very high quality and the
developers are very different from what you are allowed to purchase over
the counter. Our colors have more "oomph' and deeper pigments and a
huge variety of choice, besides, each formulation is yours, alone,
customized to your hair and what you want to achieve for your tone, depth
and dimensions. The major difference we notice in home color, is the
hair's condition. It seems to be very much inferior compared to how the
hair's condition is with the colors we use in the salon. It's not to say
box color is a bad thing, but I have a hard time saying it is good for
your hair. Many clients hair is tough enough to be able to use it, but you
really need to compensate for the damage done by using high quality hair
products. Box color also seems to fade very quickly compared to salon
quality colors.
Why do conditioners make my hair too soft?
You may
be "over moisturizing" your hair- too much of a good thing.
There are lighter conditioners, ask your stylist which is best for you.
What is a
"Hair Steamer"?
This is a great appliance used in the salon for deep conditioning the
hair. It looks very much like a regular hood hair dryer. The steam is a
very fine mist and it works to open the hair cuticle just enough to let
moisturizers, proteins or even hair color penetrate to it's optimum level.
It is usually only used for ten to fifteen minutes a treatment.
Do I have to wait until my entire old perm has grown out
before I have another one?
No, perms today compensate for different
porosity in the hair so the perm will "take" evenly all over.

Why does my perm "fall out"?
Perms
"calm down" within several weeks. They should last until they
are cut away. Over time, the hair bonds will relax even more, but does not
seem to completely loosen. Your new hair growth will not be permed, so your style may
seem to flatten, especially at the top. Perhaps a partial perm in the top
area will help your style until the next perm. Average life of a perm is
three to six months, depending on how often you trim.
What is the difference between a body, a regular and a
spiral perm?
A body wave is a regular perm, but larger rods are used
for less curl, more body. Spiral wraps are a "special technique"
where the hair is wrapped spirally like a corkscrew for that effect. At
least six inches of hair are needed for this type of perm. Regular perms
are given to put curl into the hair, anywhere from tight, small curls to
softer bigger waves.
I can feel "bumps" in my hair after a perm. What
is that?
Sometime the hair can break at the point where the perm rod elastic
touches the hair section. This is from wrapping too tightly or your hair
is too weak for the perming process. What you are feeling is the little
re-growth of hair coming back in.
Can I go
swimming in chlorine after a perm?
You should wait 48 hours after getting a perm to swim or even shampoo
or condition your hair. The reason being the perm will continue to
"oxidize" for 48 hours and you can take the chance of loosing a lot of the
curl or body if the perm is even manipulated too much as in over combing
and blow drying for that time period. After that, you can protect your
hair with a leave in conditioner before you go swimming. Wet the hair
first, then apply the leave-in.
I can see where my color didn't take right at the roots.
Your hair grows at about 1/2 inch or more per month. You may see re-growth
within a week of your new color. The average time between re-touches is
4-6 weeks. Gray hair is hair without pigment, so it is empty and the hair
cuticle is very tight causing it to be very resistant to color. Your hair
stylist will compensate for this resistance in the color formulation.

My hair looks great when I leave the salon, why can't I
get it to look like that at home?
Your stylist can show you how to
style it at home. She uses specific styling products to achieve your look.
Be sure to take home the recommended products so you can duplicate it.
How do I
find a new stylist?
I think the best way is - if you see someone with a hairstyle you
really like, stop and ask them where they got it done! Get the salon name
AND the stylist who did the cut. Call and make your appointment with that
same stylist. It may help to get the clients name if they are willing to
give it to you so the hairstylist will know which cut you really liked.
Most people would be flattered to be asked. Most salons are happy to do a
consultation at no charge , so you can go crazy "interviewing " salons and
stylist before you make a commitment. Look for someone who asks you a lot
of questions to find out as much as they can about your hair and what it
is that you would like to do with it.
What is
mechanical damage?
Mechanical or Physical damage to hair is done by overuse of appliances
such as blow dryers, flat irons or curling irons that have dried out and
damaged the hair. Even some rubber bands can cause this. It is not the
same as Chemical damage done by over coloring the hair or over processing
such as in perming.
