Nails

Tools of the trade

I have acrylic nails and go swimming often will  the chlorine in the water effect my acrylic nails?
The chlorine shouldn't hurt your acrylic nails, but having them in water quite a bit, you must be sure to have them filled every two weeks. The acrylic has a tendency to "lift' a little after several weeks, requiring a touch up. If water gets in between the nail bed and the acrylic, that could cause mold or fungus growth.

Can I go swimming the next day after getting acrylic nails?
Absolutely.

Are gel nails safer then acrylic nails of the better quality?

Gel nails are a softer product. Acrylic is a much harder and sturdier product.  Any artificial nail enhancement will be the cause of some damage, but never any long term damage.

Nail Oils work great to maintain cuticle and nail health!

Why would a person choose gel nails over acrylic?
Clients choose gel over acrylic because of preference- they can be much more shinier than the acrylics or they may not be able to wear acrylics for whatever reason such as an oily nail bed (acrylic doesn't stay on well) or sensitivities to the product.  We do much more acrylic than gel nails. They seem to hold up on the nails better.

What age do you recommend girls being before getting fake nails?
Young girls 12- 14 usually just have tips applied and polished. Well after that age, they are better able to make the commitment to having the nails "filled" every two weeks.

What is "methyl methacrylate" (MMA)
Some nail tech's are using an acrylic named "methyl methacrylate" (MMA). The same sealant used to seal teeth. This makes nails virtually unbreakable and the underlying nail bed to disintegrate. The reason they use MMA is that it can be purchased very cheap, costing as little as $15.00 per gallon, compared to ethyl methacrylate (EMA), a high quality acrylic product.
How to know if a salon is using MMA:

  • The use of drills on your nail bed.
  • MMA has a very strong sharp odor.
  • Most nail techs wear a mask.
  • They use an oversized brush.
  • The cost is very cheap for a set of nails.

Side Effects:

  • MMA may cause fetus damage, nervous system damage.

If you are not sure whether a salon uses MMA, ask which brand of acrylic they are using. If they are secretive about it, look for a salon that will be honest with you or stick with UV gel nails or silk wraps.
And always remember a manicurist should be sanitizing all instruments and your table in between clients.

What is involved in a manicure?
Soaking the fingertips, filing the nails, pushing back any excess cuticle, trimming them if needed. A hand and arm massage is performed, finishing with polish.

Manicure.

How often should I get a manicure?
Every one to two weeks, as needed for your nails.

Does a French manicure last longer than a regular manicure?
Not necessarily, as the nail polish is used to create the French look. As with any polish you can prolong the life by applying a clear top coat every few days.

How long will my polish stay on?
Five to seven days.

What is the best way to store my nail polish?
Anywhere in a dark, dry and cool place. The refrigerator works fine!

Which nail shape is most durable, round, square or oval?
In the case of artificial nails, the shape generally doesn't matter, the nails will remain strong. However, a more square or oval shape to the natural nail results in less breakage as the side walls of the nail remain intact.

Why do natural nails turn yellow? Sometimes my French manicure tend to yellow after a few days.
Usually from not using a base coat on the natural nail before polish. Darker colors can also stain the nail bed.
Exposure to UV rays, as in sun and tanning beds, tend to oxidize the polish thus ending up with a dingy or yellowing of the polish.

What is the best way to whiten and brighten natural nails?
Yellowing and stains to the natural nail is generally only on the surface unless a disorder or disease affecting the nail is present. Your nail tech would use a fine buffer and gently buff the nails. This will usually remove the odd color.

Why do cuticles crack?
They need to be trimmed and cuticle oil applied.

What is a paraffin dip?
A hand and nail treatment during your manicure that involves exfoliating the skin, applying essential oils or lotion and dipping your hands several times into a  warm paraffin bath, forming an "occlusive" seal over your skin  to "push" the needed moisture into your skin. Warm hand mitts are left on for ten to fifteen minutes.

What is a pedicure?
Soaking in a Pedi bath, exfoliating the skin, removing calluses, trimming toe nails and cuticles, filing the nails, a relaxing massage, a deep heat treatment on the feet  and polish
.

Regualar pedicures help tp maintain beautiful feet.

How often should I get a pedicure?
Pedicures are recommended to our clients every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain toenails and to keep rough skin and calluses in check.

Do acrylic nails damage your own nails?
After acrylics are removed, your natural nails will be weaker than usual until the nails have grown the whole length again.

How often should I my acrylics filled?
You should fill your acrylics every 2 to 3 weeks to maintain healthy nails.

Should my acrylics be removed periodically to allow my own nails to "breathe"?
This is a myth. Nails are comprised of keratin protein, just like hair is, and does not require oxygen. If maintained properly you should not have to remove your acrylics.

Do acrylic nails damage your own nails?
They breathe through the cuticle area, not through the free edge.

How can I avoid mold or fungus?
Fills every two weeks will keep your nails from starting to "lift", which can expose the nail to moisture and air borne bacteria.

How long until my natural nail is healthy again after  removal of my enhancements?
An average of 2 to 4 months. Regular manicures combined with a nail therapy treatment i.e.: Nailtiques, Nail Envy by OPI, applied to the nail bed will help your nails recover from and return to normal. Nails grow about 1/4 inch a month on the average.

Natural nails.

What is mechanical damage?
Mechanical or Physical damage would be if the nails
were filed too heavy, too close to the skin either by hand filing or
more predominately, nail drills. It is not the same as chemical damage,
say from acrylic chemicals or burning from the chemicals used on the
nails.

Skin

Salon exclusive make-up.

What is involved in a basic facial?
Cleansing of the face, neck and all the shoulder area with a steamer, brushes and hot towels, skin toning, appropriate masque applied and finishing with moisturizers and home care recommendations.

Why are there so many different facials?
Every client has different skin needs to achieve balance of their skin.

How often should I receive a facial?
First time clients benefit from a series of three to four facials a week to ten days apart. Monthly appointments are recommended for best results, maintaining with recommended home care. At minimum, at the change of every season.

Can the Esthetician unclog my pores?
Yes, with special essential massage oils that attract follicular debris and the use of a gentle specialized facial vacuum.

How soon can I see results?
Immediate results can be seen such as smaller pores, improved skin tone and suppleness of the skin.

Take good care of the lip area!

I have sensitive skin, will a facial cause breakouts?
No, a facial will be performed for sensitive skin; any underlying debris that may be seen has been brought to the surface and cleansed away.

What causes the most damage to my skin?
The sun is responsible for 90%- 98% of aging, causing wrinkles, lines, hyper-pigmentation ("age spots") and loss of natural moisture and elasticity. Letting your skin get overly dry also causes lines and wrinkles.

I am familiar with glycolic acid and the alphahydroxy acids, but what is betahydroxy acid and what are the benefits?
Betahydroxy acid is also known as salicylic acid and occurs naturally in wintergreen leaves, sweet birch and selected plants. This acid can aid in improving the appearance and condition of the skin. Its micro-exfoliating action causes a slow movement of the superficial cells that are already old, forcing the deep layers to replace them with younger cells. In addition to its exfoliating process, salicylic acid is used as an anti-bacterial medication and is excellent for acne.

Use the right type of product for your skin!

What can a facial do for me?
It is deep cleansing, flushing out your pores, results- smaller pores!
It is exfoliating by removing dead skin cells, results- smoother skin!
It will even out your skin tones,
results- gives skin a clean & fresh appearance!
It will balance your natural moisture level, results- softer, supple skin.

Hair Removal

Brow arches really bring out the eyes!

Will it hurt?
Removing the strip very quickly is much like pulling a band aide off.

How often should I have my eyebrows done (or lip, chin, etc.)?
Every three weeks is average and will keep them in shape. Some of my clients can go a little longer, depending on how fast they fill in. Eye brow hair replaces itself in six weeks, so by that time  all of your brows have grown back in.

How much growth do I need before the service?
Your hair needs to at least have a slight "bend" to it, about 10 days of growth.

Which type of product works best?
We use a liquid organic product called "Nudesse". It is body temperature, it cannot burn like waxes or sugars can, and it epilates the whole hair bulb, rather than just the root, resulting in slower re-growth and  even discouraging the hair from growing back over a period of time of regular servicing.

Will it make the hair grow in coarser or thicker?
No, it actually thins it out and discourages it from growing back.

What causes those little bumps after?
These are hairs that have been "pulled" at, but not removed because they were not long enough for the product to "grasp". This doesn't always happen and is just temporary.

Hair

Tools of the trade.

How often do I need to get my haircut?
Average time between haircuts to maintain your current style would be 4 weeks if it is very short, six for medium and 8 weeks for most other styles. Reason being once the hair grows a 1/2 inch or more, it starts to loose the shape cut into the style.

Is there a difference between store brand and professional products?
Yes, you will find better performance, higher quality ingredients, higher concentration of the product (less water) and a better price per ounce or usage with the professional products. We find that most drug store brands "coat" the hair with a buildup that really affects your drying time! And eventually, will even prevent needed moisture absorption to your hair. Most professional products are formulated for targeted specific hair needs, so they really do need professional recommendation. You may buy something in the stores that will not work well with your hair, even if it is being sold as a "professional" product.

What is the difference between a razor and a scissor cut?
A scissor cuts the hair very bluntly for a very defined line, as in the classic "bob cut". It also provides a heavy volume line if desired.
A razor cutting tool will provide a very "textured", tapered line resulting in slightly different lengths in the hair ends. This  can also provide fullness, but with a much lighter, softer, airy  feel  and look to the resulting hairline.
Soft, airy texture can also be put into the hair with scissors using specialized techniques used by your stylist.

What is "texturizing"?
Texture within your hairstyle can be achieved in several ways- mechanically, as with shears or razor tools and temporarily with tools like irons and/or texturizing styling products, or  chemically, such as with perming techniques or hair straightners. Notice how the texture of the hair changes with hair color- this is a slight chemical change resulting in a different texture to the hair than you started with before hair color. Most texturizing is done during haircutting, putting different lengths of hair within the style to add body and fullness. The next most often used form of texturizing the hair is with a chemical treatment, "perms."

My hair is thinning! What can I do?
When it comes to men- the least to do is shampoo twice! This deep cleanses the scalp and follicles to remove oils that have absorbed the testosterone hormone, which can put the hair in a longer  and longer "resting" stage, until eventually it stays in that state and miniaturizes to oblivion. Hair vitamins are good working from the inside, (Vitamin B's), topical crème for thinning hair help to feed and maintain hair growth. Genetics have a say in all of this, too. Rogaine can help up to 30% of the population. If the hair loss is sudden, a visit to the doctor may uncover something else going on in your body.
Our service in our salon uses a High Frequency hair and scalp glass rake to stimulate hair growth. Massage, or a good brushing with a natural bristle brush, also helps with stimulating circulation, which is how your hair receive it's vital nutrients from the blood to grow.

Tools tools tools

I want to get a perm and a color. How long should I wait between services and which one should be done first?
It is possible they could be performed on the same day, or from three days to a week apart. Perms should be done first if you are doing them closely together (within a few weeks). In between perms, average can be anywhere from 3 months to six or more, depending on your hair style. Time in between hair colors could anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks up to 8 weeks at the most. This really depends on your tolerance for "roots", 1/4 of an inch can show up in 3 three weeks, in 8 weeks, you could have 1 1/2 inches or more.

What is the difference between a cap hi-light and foiling?
Caps have hair pulled through at random, typically using only one color to hi-light. This should only be used with shoulder length or less hair.  Foiling is more precise, weaving hair exactly where and how much. Several colors can be used easily with foiling. A more natural effect will be achieved with foils also allowing more time between touch-ups since the color can be applied more closely towards the scalp. Foils are used with "Blocking" color, "chunking" and dimensional hair coloring.

What is the difference between semi and permanent hair-color?
Semi is deposit only; you can change tone, cover gray or darken. Permanent hair color can do all that and lighten your color. Permanent hair color is what works best to cover over 20% gray hair.

Irons for the hair.

What is different about "Box" hair color bought in the drugstore and the hair color used in a salon for professional color?
What is used in the salon is for professional use only. The colorist has been trained in product formulation and techniques for that particular hair color. Professional colors are are very high quality and the developers are very different from what you are allowed to purchase over the counter. Our colors  have more "oomph' and deeper pigments and a huge variety of choice, besides, each formulation is yours, alone, customized to your hair and what you want to achieve for your tone, depth and dimensions. The major difference we notice in home color, is the hair's condition. It seems to be very much inferior compared to how the hair's condition is with the colors we use in the salon. It's not to say box color is a bad thing, but I have a hard time saying it is good for your hair. Many clients hair is tough enough to be able to use it, but you really need to compensate for the damage done by using high quality hair products. Box color also seems to fade very quickly compared to salon quality colors.

Why do conditioners make my hair too soft?
You may be "over moisturizing" your hair- too much of a good thing. There are lighter conditioners, ask your stylist which is best for you.

What is a "Hair Steamer"?
This is a great appliance used in the salon for deep conditioning the hair. It looks very much like a regular hood hair dryer. The steam is a very fine mist and it works to open the hair cuticle just enough to let moisturizers, proteins or even hair color penetrate to it's optimum level. It is usually only used for ten to fifteen minutes a treatment.

Do I have to wait until my entire old perm has grown out before I have another one?
No, perms today compensate for different porosity in the hair so the perm will "take" evenly all over.

Snip snip

Why does my perm "fall out"?
Perms "calm down" within several weeks. They should last until they are cut away. Over time, the hair bonds will relax even more, but does not seem to completely loosen. Your new hair growth will not be permed, so your style may seem to flatten, especially at the top. Perhaps a partial perm in the top area will help your style until the next perm. Average life of a perm is three to six months, depending on how often you trim.

What is the difference between a body, a regular and a spiral perm?
A body wave is a regular perm, but larger rods are used for less curl, more body. Spiral wraps are a "special technique" where the hair is wrapped spirally like a corkscrew for that effect. At least six inches of hair are needed for this type of perm. Regular perms are given to put curl into the hair, anywhere from tight, small curls to softer bigger waves.

I can feel "bumps" in my hair after a perm. What is that?
Sometime the hair can break at the point where the perm rod elastic touches the hair section. This is from wrapping too tightly or your hair is too weak for the perming process. What you are feeling is the little re-growth of hair coming back in.

Can I go swimming in chlorine after a perm?
You should wait 48 hours after getting a perm to swim or even shampoo or condition your hair. The reason being the perm will continue to "oxidize" for 48 hours and you can take the chance of loosing a lot of the curl or body if the perm is even manipulated too much as in over combing and blow drying for that time period. After that, you can protect your hair with a leave in conditioner before you go swimming. Wet the hair first, then apply the leave-in.

I can see where my color didn't take right at the roots.
Your hair grows at about 1/2 inch or more per month. You may see re-growth within a week of your new color. The average time between re-touches is 4-6 weeks. Gray hair is hair without pigment, so it is empty and the hair cuticle is very tight causing it to be very resistant to color. Your hair stylist will compensate for this resistance in the color formulation.

Hair needs cut.

My hair looks great when I leave the salon, why can't I get it to look like that at home?
Your stylist can show you how to style it at home. She uses specific styling products to achieve your look. Be sure to take home the recommended products so you can duplicate it.

How do I find a new stylist?
I think the best way is - if you see someone with a hairstyle you really like, stop and ask them where they got it done! Get the salon name AND the stylist who did the cut. Call and make your appointment with that same stylist. It may help to get the clients name if they are willing to give it to you so the hairstylist will know which cut you really liked. Most people would be flattered to be asked. Most salons are happy to do a consultation at no charge , so you can go crazy "interviewing " salons and stylist before you make a commitment. Look for someone who asks you a lot of questions to find out as much as they can about your hair and what it is that you would like to do with it.

What is mechanical damage?
Mechanical or Physical damage to hair is done by overuse of appliances such as blow dryers, flat irons or curling irons that have dried out and damaged the hair. Even some rubber bands can cause this. It is not the same as Chemical damage done by over coloring the hair or over processing such as in perming.
