Nails

I have acrylic nails and go swimming often will  the chlorine in the water effect my acrylic nails?
The chlorine shouldn't hurt your acrylic nails, but having them in water quite a bit, you must be sure to have them filled every two weeks. The acrylic has a tendency to "lift' alittle after several weeks, requiring a touch up. If water gets in between the nail bed and the acrylic, that could cause mold or fungus growth.

Are gel nails safer then acrylic nails of the better quality?

Gel nails are a softer product. Acrylic is a much harder and sturdier product.

Why would a person choose gel nails over acrylic?
Clients choose gel over acrylic because of preference- they can be much more shinier than the acrylics or they may not be able to wear acrylics for whatever reason such as an oily nail bed (acrylic doesn't stay on well) or sensitivities to the product.  We do much more acrylic than gel nails. They seem to hold up on the nails better.

What age do you recommend girls being before getting fake nails?
Young girls 12- 14 usually just have tips applied and polished. after that age, they are better able to make the commitment to having the nails "filled" every two weeks.

What is "methyl methacrylate" (MMA)
Some nail tech's are using an acrylic named "methyl methacrylate" (MMA). The same sealant used to seal teeth. This makes nails virtually unbreakable and the underlying nail bed to disintegrate. The reason they use MMA is that it can be purchased very cheap, costing as little as $15.00 per gallon, compared to ethyl methacrylate (EMA), a high quality acrylic product.
How to know if a salon is using MMA:

  • The use of drills on your nail bed.
  • MMA has a very strong sharp odor.
  • Most nail techs wear a mask.
  • They use an oversized brush.
  • The cost is very cheap for a set of nails.

Side Effects:

  • MMA may cause fetus damage, nervous system damage.

If you are not sure whether a salon uses MMA, ask which brand of acrylic they are using. If they are secretive about it, look for a salon that will be honest with you or stick with UV gel nails or silk wraps.
And always remember a manicurist should be sanitizing all instruments and your table in between clients.

What is involved in a manicure?
Soaking the fingertips, filing the nails, pushing back any excess cuticle, trimming them if needed. A hand and arm massage is performed, finishing with polish.

How often should I get a manicure?
Every one to two weeks, as needed for your nails.

How long will my polish stay on?
 Five to seven days.

Why do natural nails turn yellow?
Usually from not using a base coat before polish. Darker colors can stain the nail bed.

Why do cuticles crack?
They need to be trimmed and cuticle oil applied.

What is a paraffin dip?
A hand and nail treatment during your manicure that involves exfoliating the skin, applying essential oils or lotion and dipping your hands several times into a  warm paraffin bath, forming an "occlusive" seal over your skin  to "push" the needed moisture into your skin. Warm hand mitts are left on for ten to fifteen minutes.

What is a pedicure?
Soaking in a pedi bath, exfoliating the skin, removing calluses, trimming toe nails and cuticles, filing the nails, a relaxing massage, a deep heat treatment on the feet  and polish.

Do acrylic nails damage your own nails?
After acrylics are removed, your natural nails will be weaker than usual until the nails have grown the whole length again.

Do acrylic nails damage your own nails?
They breathe through the cuticle area, not through the free edge.

How can I avoid mold or fungus?
Fills every two weeks will keep your nails from starting to "lift", which can expose the nail to moisture and air borne bacteria.

Skin

What is involved in a basic facial?
Cleansing of the face, neck and all the shoulder area with a steamer, brushes and hot towels, skin toning, appropriate masque applied and finishing with moisturizers and home care recommendations.

Why are there so many different facials?
Every client has different skin needs to achieve balance of their skin.

How often should I receive a facial?
First time clients benefit from a series of three to four facials a week to ten days apart. Monthly appointments are recommended for best results, maintaining with recommended home care. At minimum, at the change of every season.

Can the Esthetician unclog my pores?
Yes, with special essential massage oils that attract follicular debris and the use of a specialized facial vacume.

How soon can I see results?
Immediate results can be seen such as smaller pores, improved skin tone and suppleness of the skin.

I have sensitive skin, will a facial cause breakouts?
No, a facial will be performed for sensitive skin; any underlying debris that may be seen has been brought to the surface and cleansed away.

What causes the most damage to my skin?
The sun is responsible for 90%- 98% of aging, causing wrinkles, lines, hyper-pigmentation ("age spots") and loss of natural moisture and elasticity.

I am familiar with glycolic acid and the alphahydroxy acids, but what is betahydroxy acid and what are the benefits?
Betahydroxy acid is also known as salicylic acid and occurs naturally in wintergreen leaves, sweet birch and selected plants. This acid can aid in improving the appearance and condition of the skin. Its micro-exfoliating action causes a slow movement of the superficial cells that are already old, forcing the deep layers to replace them with younger cells. In addition to its exfoliating process, salicylic acid is used as an anti-bacterial medication and is excellent for acne.

What can a facial do for me?
It is deep cleansing, flushing out your pores, results- smaller pores!
It is exfoliating by removing dead skin cells, results- smoother skin!
It will even out your skin tones,
results- gives skin a clean & fresh appearance!
It will balance your natural moisture level, results- softer, supple skin.

Hair Removal

Will it hurt?
Removing the strip very quickly is much like pulling a band aide off.

How often should I have my eyebrows done (or lip, chin, etc.)?
Every three weeks is average and will keep them in shape.

How much growth do I need before the service?
Your hair needs to at least have a slight "bend" to it, about 10 days of growth.

Which type of product works best?
We use a liquid organic product called "Nudesse". It is body temperature, it cannot burn like waxes or sugars can, and it epilates the whole hair bulb, rather than just the root, resulting in slower re-growth and  even discouraging the hair from growing back over a period of time of regular servicing.

Will it make the hair grow in coarser or thicker?
No, it actually thins it out and discourages it from growing back.

What causes those little bumps after?
These are hairs that have been "pulled" at, but not removed because they were not long enough for the product to "grasp". This doesn't always happen and is just temporary.

Hair

Is there a difference between store brand and professional products?
Yes, you will find better performance, higher quality ingredients, higher concentration of the product (less water) and a better price per ounce or usage with the professional products.

What is the difference between a razor and a scissor cut?
A scissor cuts the hair very bluntly for a very defined line, as in the classic "bob cut". It also provides a heavy volume line if desired.
A razor cutting tool will provide a very "textured", tapered line resulting in slightly different lengths in the hair ends. This  can also provide fullness, but with a much lighter, softer, airy  feel  and look to the resulting hairline.

What is "texturizing"?
Texture within your hairstyle can be achieved in several ways- mechanically, as with shears or razor tools and temporarily with tools like irons and/or texturizing styling products, or  chemically, such as with perming techniques or hair straightners. Notice how the texture of the hair changes with hair color- this is a slight chemical change resulting in a different texture to the hair than you started with before hair color. Most texturizing is done during haircutting, putting different lengths of hair within the style to add body and fullness. The next most often used form of texturizing the hair is with a chemical treatment, "perms."

I want to get a perm and a color. How long should I wait between services and which one should be done first?
It is possible they could be performed on the same day, or from three days to a week apart. Perms should be done first if you are doing them closely together (within a few weeks).

What is the difference between a cap hi-light and foiling?
Caps have hair pulled through at random, typically using only one color to hi-light. Foiling is more precise, weaving hair exactly where and how much. Several colors can be used easily with foiling. A more natural effect will be achieved with foils also allowing more time between touch-ups since the color can be applied more closely towards the scalp.

What is the difference between semi and permanent hair-color?
Semi is deposit only; you can change tone, cover gray or darken. Permanent hair color can do all that and lighten your color.

Why do conditioners make my hair too soft?
You may be "over moisturizing" your hair- too much of a good thing. There are lighter conditioners, ask your stylist which is best for you.

Do I have to wait until my entire old perm has grown out before I have another one?
No, perms today compensate for different porosity in the hair so the perm will "take" evenly all over.

Why does my perm "fall out"?
Perms "calm down" within several weeks. They should last until they are cut away. Your new hair growth will not be permed, so your style may seem to flatten, especially at the top. Perhaps a partial perm in the top area will help your style until the next perm. Average life of a perm is three months, depending on how often you trim.

What is the difference between a body, a regular and a spiral perm?
A body wave is a regular perm, but larger rods are used for less curl, more body. Spiral wraps are a "special technique" where the hair is wrapped spirally like a corkscrew for that effect. At least six inches of hair are needed for this type of perm.

I can see where my color didn't take right at the roots.
Your hair grows at about 1/2 inch or more per month. You may see re-growth within a week of your new color. The average time between re-touches is 4-6 weeks.

My hair looks great when I leave the salon, why can't I get it to look like that at home?
Your stylist can show you how to style it at home. She uses specific styling products to achieve your look. Be sure to take home the recommended products so you can duplicate it.
